Vauxhall’s Electric Streets of Britain Campaign Accelerates EV Charging Access Across the UK

Vauxhall’s Electric Streets of Britain campaign supports the 40% of UK households without off-street parking by collecting data on local EV charging needs. New reports highlight the urgent need for better on-street charging to help both drivers and businesses transition to electric vehicles.

Vauxhall’s Electric Streets of Britain Campaign Aims to Speed Up EV Transition for UK Drivers

Vauxhall’s Electric Streets of Britain campaign is helping to support the 40% of UK households without off-street parking in their transition to electric vehicles (EVs). With the goal of ensuring easy and convenient access to electric vehicle charge-points, the campaign encourages UK residents to share their local charging needs.

Whether you're already driving an electric vehicle or considering the switch in the future, Vauxhall wants to hear from you. Through a brief survey, Vauxhall is gathering data on where charging facilities are needed most across the country. This will help create a nationwide picture of EV charging demand, which will be used to support local councils in accelerating the installation of on-street charging infrastructure.

New Report and Heatmap Reveal Urgent Need for On-Street Charging

In a significant update for the campaign, Vauxhall released a new report in March 2025 that examines the electrification strategies of small and medium businesses across the UK, exploring their challenges in transitioning to fully electric fleets. Vauxhall also published a heatmap showing where local streets have been identified as needing additional charging access. This data was collected through the Electric Streets of Britain database and aims to highlight areas in need of urgent attention.

Additionally, Vauxhall conducted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, which revealed that 56.5% of the 267 local authorities that responded still lack a published strategy for on-street residential EV charging. Though this figure marks a 15% improvement from 2023, it underscores the work still needed to meet the demand for accessible charging infrastructure across the UK.

Improving Metrics to Measure Electrification Success

Vauxhall has also collaborated with Cenex, a leading UK organization specializing in low-carbon technologies, to evaluate current metrics used to track the effectiveness of the UK’s electric vehicle infrastructure (EVI). Their findings suggest that the UK’s electrification targets are too broad and should be more region-specific to track progress more effectively. Vauxhall’s Electric Van Adoption Report highlights the importance of improved on-street charging infrastructure for businesses looking to switch to electric fleets.

Businesses Face Challenges Without Adequate On-Street Charging

According to Vauxhall’s report, 90% of fleet operators depend on residential charging infrastructure for their electric van fleets, and 23% of businesses cited inadequate on-street charging as the main barrier to transitioning to an electric fleet. The lack of reliable, accessible charging points remains a significant hurdle for both businesses and everyday drivers hoping to join the UK’s electrification journey.

Supporting British Business and the EV Transition

As a champion of British business, Vauxhall is committed to promoting the Electric Streets of Britain campaign to speed up the installation of more on-street chargers across the UK. This is crucial not only for individual EV owners but also for businesses that are eager to make the shift to electric fleets. The Electric Streets of Britain campaign was launched in August 2023 after an exclusive Vauxhall investigation revealed that over 70% of UK councils had no published strategy for on-street residential EV charging.

Key findings from the Freedom of Information request revealed:

71.6% of UK councils lack a published strategy for residential on-street charging.
69% of local authorities have yet to install any on-street residential charge points.
London will soon have over 19,105 on-street charge points, more than double the total number in all other UK regions combined.
Collaborating for Change

In response, Vauxhall has partnered with leading UK on-street charge-point operators, Char.gy, Connected Kerb, and SureCharge, to support local councils in effectively and efficiently meeting the demand for EV charging. The goal is to ensure that more businesses and individuals can benefit from the transition to electric vehicles.

Through its ongoing efforts with Electric Streets of Britain, Vauxhall is striving to make electric vehicle adoption easier and more accessible across the UK. With the campaign continuing to gather data, Vauxhall is committed to working alongside its partners to drive the future of clean, sustainable transport.
